Pavel Materna a třísložková teorie jazyka
Pavel Materna and the Ordered-Triple Theory

In our contribution we remind the original cooperation with Prof. P. Materna which started in sixties of last century and led to the creation of the Ordered-Triple Theory of Language whose authors are P. Materna, K. Pala and A. Svoboda. The papers on this theory were published in 1976 and 1979, however, Materna‘s name could not appear in the paper‘s titles - the communist regime in this way punished him for being expelled from the Communist Party.Ordered-Triple Theory, as the title suggests captures thre fundamental components of a languge system, i. e. syntax, semantics and pragmatics, and is fully comparable with similar enterprises abroad. It become a starting point for further interconnection of logic, linguistics and informatics thanks to the intensive mutual cooperation of K. Pala and P. Materna at the newly established Faculty of Informatics from 1995. This cooperation attracted students of the Faculty, among themespecially Aleš Horák, whose essential contribution is the computer implementation of the transparent intensional logic (TIL) in relation to the natural language processing (primarily Czech).

O inferencialismu pro Pavla Maternu
On Inferentialism for Pavel Materna

Inferencialismus idealizuje proces získání významu v komunikaci. K tomu snadno najdeme protipříklady. Zcela zde chybí nějaká, zejména pojmová analýza a také nějaké rozhodovací (meta)pravidlo pro získání významu.
Inferentialism idealizes the process of obtaining of the meaning in a communication. It is easy to find a counter-argument. There is a lack of an analysis at all especially a conceptual one. And there is no decision-making meta-rule for obtaining the meaning.

Realism in Art: A Short Note
Realismus v umění: krátká poznámka
abstract |

Art has been considered in one way or another to be in close relation to truth. The goal of each and every author is and has been to relay something vital regarding the world, to express a kind of truth. Most likely no artist has ever wanted intentionally to lie. A work of art that speaks truth is normally described as a realistic one. Does this mean that the concept of realism as something expressing truth is related to all works of art? Is realism a trivial concept? The goal of this paper is to attempt to clarify the concept of artistic realism in a simple way. To begin, some thoughts about artistic realism are introduced. In the following parts, e. g. a brief attempt to clarify realism based on possible worlds semantics is made. It is stated that the more true a representation is, the less informative it is. The most realistic work wouldn’t in conclusion say anything. So, the possible world semantics is found to be not proper tool for our goal. Finally, a proposal for a natural concept of artistic realism as a meaningful component of a critics’ vocabulary is proposed.
Nejrealističtější dílo by v posledku neříkalo nic. Sémantika možných světů proto není shledána vhodným nástrojem pro explikaci pojmu umělecký realismus. V poslední části je krátce představen smysluplný pojem realismu.

Anaximander’s πρηστῆρος αὐλός
Anaximandrův πρηστῆρος αὐλός
abstract |

The word πρηστήρ creates confusion and controversy almost wherever it occurs. Its lexicon entry in LSJ has been revised several times but it is still not very helpful. Lack of clarity of the expression also lies in the fact that it describes tornadic, fiery, and luminous meteorological phenomena. A recent discussion about the term πρηστῆρος αὐλός in Anaximander raised this issue again. This study clarifies the meaning of πρηστῆρος αὐλός, as well as the word πρηστήρ, on the basis of examination of all known occurrences of this word. The study excludes the meaning “bellows”, the meaning “lightning” is confirmed rather for the late texts, the basic meaning “tornado” is typical especially for authors dealing with marine navigation and meteorology. Πρηστῆρος αὐλός is the funnel of a tornado. Based on current knowledge of meteorology (with regard to the Greek region), it is also explained why a tornado was often seen as fiery.
Slovo πρηστήρ vyvolává zmatek a spory, téměř kdekoli se objeví. Πρηστῆρος αὐλός je trychtýř tornáda.

In the final speech before the vote on his guilt or innocence Plato´s Socrates reminds the judge that he has a family including a teenage son and two small boys. In this case he refers to the verse of Homer´s Odyssey to point out that he was not born „of an oak or a rock” (34d). The aim of the article is to analyze and interpret the meaning of that quote. The first part will focus on the comparison of Homer´s verse with its form in Plato’s Apology. In the second section I will examine what strategy Socrates followed when he made reference to that line. The final section will focus on the question why Plato´s Socrates quotes Homer despite his previous statement that poets do not have wisdom.

Parmenides a spor o dejiny metafyziky. Nietzscheho a Heideggerova kritika metafyziky
Parmenides and the Disputeon the History of Metaphysics - Nietzsche's and Heidegger's Critique of Metaphysics
abstract |
view |
rights & permissions
The main theme of this article is the dispute on the meaning (destruction) of the history of metaphysics on the background of a reflection of Parmenides’ philosophical message. The leitmotif of the problem relates to the meaning (of destruction) of history of metaphysics considered as Western ontology (Heidegger’s position); with the identification of Platonic (metaphysical) tradition considered as a false knowledge perceiving being existing in truth, which, in the light of the thesis about nonexistence of absolute truth and its explication, becomes a concrete effort of temporal and endless human being (Nietzsche’s position). Nietzsche and Heidegger show that the first moment we must think about is our (metaphysical) ability to ground theoretically the meaning of the universe. This ambition then grounds whole spiritual tradition. Nietzsche’s critique of Parmenides’ thought means most probably his critique of the development of his basic assumptions in Platonic version of metaphysics. This form of critique is acceptable for Heidegger, too. A disagreement develops only concerning the final meaning of the history of metaphysics – while Nietzsche sees them as a completion of the moral perspective of universe and as a problem of critique of metaphysically masked nihilistic dimension of morality, Heidegger sees the completion of history of metaphysics as essential forgetting (more precisely masking) of the question of Being, therefore as an ontological problem. What Heidegger refuses to bring to consequences are the nihilistic consequences of his ontology, uncovered and thematised through Nietzsche’s critique of morality, in which the forgotteness of Being is unmasked in its (finally) nihilistic dimension.

Heideggerov obrat v kontexte vzťahu človeka a bytia
Heidegger's Turning in the Context of the Relationship of Man and Being
abstract |

Turning (Kehre) in Heidegger’s thinking reaches not only his search of the question of Being (Seinsfrage) but also the change of the status of human being in relation to Being. This change can be displayed also through Heidegger’s interpretation of pre-Socratic philosophy. While during the period before turning human being as being-there (Dasein) is able to understand Being and he is connected to it, in the period after turning this relationship changes completely. For Heidegger Being after turning becomes Being with the character of non-temporality or pre-temporality and it has its own history. Knowledge of the truth of Being happens not to be a matter of human being but it depends on the fact whether Being hides or unhides.

Rortyho ironické čítanie Heideggera
Rorty's Ironic Reading of Heidegger
abstract |
view |
rights & permissions
The goal of this study is to analyse Rorty’s classification of Heidegger as an ironical theoretic. Rorty claims that the main task of philosophy is its critique of its tradition, whereas Heidegger is his inspiration in this role. But the problem is that Heidegger is not concerned with historical-philosophical interpretation of history of philosophy but only with philosophical one and that he conforms to his own philosophical interests. For an accountable research of our main problem it is necessary to know Rorty’s definition and demarcation of theoretical ironic who has doubts about function, directivity and privileged status of vocabularies and about the existence of final vocabulary, too. It is necessary to show an anthropological and moral-axiological dimension of Neopragmatic thinking, which is far away from Heidegger after the turn, as well as the problem of Socratic justice, which is far away from rortyan ironic too. The important characteristic of a theoretical ironic is his rejection of traditional metaphysics and his concentration on metaphysics in different sense, thus comprehend the metaphysical (theoretical) urge so much that one eliminates it. But this does not hold for Heidegger, either. Rorty’s challenge to philosophy as fulfilment of humanity is in absolute contradiction to Heidegger’s Letter about humanism, in which he reduces humanism to the history of Being and he does not care about the man or human dignity, but only about the thought of Being.

Můj J. B. Kozák:
Úryvky Z Přednášek
My J. B. Kozák

The aim of the essay is to commemorate J. B. Kozák (1888–1974) and to recall the value of his lectures given in the years 1949–1952 at the Charles-University in Prague. These lectures were important in connection with the new political situation after the communist putsch in 1948. The life of J. B. Kozák was deeply influenced by his clergyman education. Nevertheless he finally obtained the position of professor of philosophy at Charles-University in Prague. As a prominent representative of Czech cultural life he became an active member of a small circle founded by the writer K. Čapek (1890–1938) and supported by T. G. Masaryk (1850–1937). J. B. Kozák defended the democratic ideas but he was also sympathetic with the socially oriented leftists (see e. g. his friendship with professor Z. Nejedlý, 1878–1962). Before the war J. B. Kozák left Prague. He began to lecture philosophy at Oberlin College in Chicago (USA). The end of the war saw him back in Prague. In summer 1945 he got his chair with the possibility lecturing immediately. In the animated discussions with the Marxists he defended the ideas of humanity and freedom. He got the sympathy of students and became their moral authority. This esteem remained also in the hard times of political purges when many of his friends were discharged. Nevertheless his stay in the university employment did not harm his authority. He was protected because of his leftist views before the war. In spite of all the respect for him the authorities at university restrained his lecturing heavily. A small part of his „history of philosophy“ is enclosed as an exemplum of his university lessons.

Místo filosofie v díle Hanse Urse von Balthasara K 110. Výročí Jeho Narození
The Importance of Philosophy in the Work of Hans Urs von Balthasar

Článek připomíná 110. výročí narození švýcarského katolického teologa a filosofa (metafyzika) Hanse Urse von Balthasara (1905 Luzern–1988 Basilej). Po studiích germanistiky ve Vídni, Berlíně a Curychu pokračoval ve studiu filosofie a teologie u jezuitů (E. Przywara, H. de Lubac). Před nadějnou akademickou dráhou dal přednost pastorační službě u studentů. V Basileji navázal úzké kontakty s K. Rahnerem a K. Barthem. S Henri de Lubacem a Josephem Ratzingerem roku 1972 spoluzakládal mezinárodní katolickou revui Communio. Svou rozsáhlou a rozmanitou publikační činnost završil trilogií Herrlichkeit–Theodramatik–Theologik (1961–1987), v níž uvažuje o Bohu v estetických souvislostech, v kategoriích transcendentálií pravdy, dobra a jejich ztělesnění – krásy.The article recalls the 110th anniversary of the birth of the Swiss Catholic theologian and philosopher (metaphysician) Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905 Luzern–1988 Basel). Heideggerova interpretace Kantovy kritické filosofie v práci Kant a problém metafyziky
Heidegger's Interpretation of Kant's Critical Philosophy in Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics
abstract |

rights & permissions
When pondering on Heidegger's attitude to Kant, as it is depicted in the work Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics, the most important aspect is not the content, that is, an analysis of what is being written about Kant, but the question why Heidegger was able to employ his specific method and which semantic and pragmatic assumptions he accepted. Soon after the work was published, opinions emerged according to which Kant's texts were always subordinated to the interests and process of Heidegger's reflections of philosophy. According to these opinions, Heidegger treated Kant as a thinker who discovered the idea of the originality of being, but never formulated it adequately. That was a task awaiting Heidegger himself. This paper also defends the claim that Heidegger's book does not bring a unified picture of Kant's method, but only provides the skeleton of Heidegger's exposition of his own philosophy, which lacks any validation by scientific means. The author attempts to answer the question why Heidegger chose Kant, whom he had rejected, and assesses the assumptions that Heidegger accepted in order to continue from his unfinished Being and Time to his primary goal - the metaphysics of human existence. The most significant of these was the assumption of "insufficiently expressed Kant"; Heidegger announced that the Kant of the written texts (especially the Critique of Pure Reason) was not the Kant that could have been expressed, and inferred that he would bring his interpretation of Kant to a successful conclusion. The paper shows the contradictions that emerged in the effort to expound the critical philosophy by Heideggerian distortion according to antecedently accepted goals. A substantial part of the paper deals with the adaptability of Heidegger's thought to the Nazi ideology not only in 1933-1945, but even before the publication of Being and Time and in the decades after the destruction of Hitler's regime. The paper concludes that Heidegger's legacy is merely his "metaphysics of Aryan death", which finds its place in modern philosophy with great difficulty.

K Nietzscheho kritike príčinného myslenia
On Nietzsche's Critique of Causal Thinking
abstract |

The paper focuses on Nietzsche's critique of causal thinking, which he associates with Plato's moral thinking. The first part presents Nietzsche's critique of the idea of pure spirit, which can, according to Plato, ascend above the world of senses. Nietzsche considers this idea, which gives support to Plato's theory of the preference of good to evil and truth to falsity, misconceived. The second part deals with Nietzsche's rehabilitation of the senses, so that he can show that the world perceived by them is illogical and unjust. Logic, thus, arises from non-logic and not from the misconception that there is a cause, the world of the Good, behind the sensual world. The focal point of this part of the paper is an interpretation of Nietzsche's critique of the "Four Great Errors" from his work The Twilight of the Idols. The final part focuses on the question whether Nietzsche successfully dealt with Plato's metaphysicsand dissociated his theory from it completely.

Vzpomínka na profesora Lubomíra Nového
A Memory of Professor Lubomír Nový

I am glad that I can contribute to the commemoration of professor Lubomir Novy and I appreciate that I had the chance to be one of his many students. Lubomir Novy was, together with his other colleagues, able to create a very friendly environment for us students. He stood out with his dynamism. His exams were not easy, because it was always a lesson in creating questions and searching for answers. I think that this "creating questions and searching for answers" was his lifelong attitude. Thanks to this, he was one of the main personalities of philosophical thought in this country in the sixties. He remained creative even in the nineties when he returned to his profession after an enforced break.

Jubilejní studie představuje Lubomíra Nového v prostředí Filozofické fakulty tehdejší Univerzity J. E. Purkyně (dnes Masarykovy univerzity) od 60. let, kdy byl významným účastníkem neformálních interdisciplinárních diskusí o společenských i odborných otázkách. Sledujeme jej pak v obrodném procesu konce 60. let i v následujícím období tzv. normalizace, kdy jej nezbytnost přiměla orientovat se spíše k problémům sociologickým. Text uzavírá několik zmínek o vybraných Nového monografiích.
This paper was written on the occasion of Lubomír Nový's jubilee and introduces him as a member of the Faculty of Arts of the Masaryk (J. E. Purkyně) University, where he participated in informal interdisciplinary discussions on social and scientific topics in the 1960s. We follow him then during the renewal process in the end of the 60s and in the following period of so called normalisation, when he was forced to deal with rather sociological topics. Finally, we bring some remarks about his monographs.

Nový's book Philosopher T G. Masaryk (1994) has three layers, which naturally contact and merge: Firstly, Nový reviews existing literature on TGM with an emphasis on the most recent contributions. Secondly, he attempts to arrange and systematize Masaryk's work, map its internal logic and classify it in European context (Brentano, Husserl). Finally, he asks and answers questions that can be, in a narrower sense of the words, called problematic and topical. Nový shows how Masaryk's thought helps to revive the question of the meaning and order of our endeavour and creativity.

First, I have to mention a medallion of Josef Zumr for Luboš's sixtieth birthday, published Filosofický časopis in 1995, as a proof that our former head of the department was respected not only by philosophers from Brno. Luboš was born in the same year as me, but managed to finish his secondary school studies one year earlier. So it happened that in 1950 I met him at the Faculty of Arts as an assistant professor (in his lecture on ethics); and he met me as one of his first philosophy students. Since we worked at the same department since, and we were meeting not only as colleagues, but also as friends outside the university. What remains unforgettable are for instance our tours to the Slovak cottage to visit Pavel Pácl where I was fortifying my knowledge of how naturally Lubos could be an excellent companion in such an environment (not just during card games, but even when we tried to contribute to the maintenance of Pavel's cottage and its preparation for the winter). I tried to say a few words about Luboš's relation to the family to which he was born, to his own family, to his native region, and indeed about Luboš as a teacher who was popular and esteemed among all students. Unfortunately, it had to come eventually to the words of admiration for his valiant struggle with a disease that eventually succumbed

Tělesnost svobody v raném díle Simone de Beauvoir
Bodily Freedom in Early Writings of Simone de Beauvoir
abstract |

What is being analyzed and subsequently interpreted in our study, is Simone de Beauvoir's conception of freedom and its bodily determination. Because we are using Beauvoir's first novel, She Came to Stay (ĽInvitée), where her first conceptualization of these fenomenons can be found. Although this novel is strongly based on dialogues between three main characters, we are convinced, that it is precisely their dialogue, what allows specificity of Beauvoir's conceptions. Therefore, by interpreting some of these dialogues we are trying to make clear, where according to Beauvoir freedom begins and how it is being limited.
