Der Aufsatz, der einen Ausschnitt aus einer grösseren Arbeit darstellt, behandelt die Auffassung des Menschen und seiner gesellschaftlichen Stellung in der Saint-Simonistischen Tradition, besonders in den Schriften von Sainte-Beuve. Der Verfasser beginnt mit dem Begriff des Menschen bei Descartes und verfolgt die Geschichte dieses Begriffs bei den Enzyklopädisten, Ideologen und Saint-Simonisten. Charakteristisch für diese Entwicklungslinie ist die zunehmende Diesseitigkeit, Wissenschaftlichkeit und Konkretheit in der Ausarbeitung der Lehre vom Menschen.Gerade aus der materialistischen Seite des Saint-Simonismus kommen die Anstösse für seinen neuen Glauben an den Menschen, die diese Doktrin zu einem radikalen Erben der humanistischen Tradition machen. Der Verfasser weist darauf hin, dass der Radikalismus des Humanismus mit dem wissenschaftlichen und technischen Fortschritt in engster Verbindung steht. Die Saint-Simonistische Religion erscheint als eine Konsequenz der Entfaltung der Produktivkräfte und der Beherrschung der Welt. Das Interesse des Saint-Simonismus am Menschen ist im wesentlichen ein Interesse an der konkreten Gestaltung der Gesellschaft.The subject of this article, which forms part of a larger work, is the concept of man revealed in the writings of Sainte-Beuve. The author goes back to Descartes and follows the history of the concept — a process characterized by an ever growing sense of this-worldliness, by an ever stronger scientific spirit, and by the rehabilitation of matter — through the Encyclopedists, the Ideologues, and the Saint-Simonians, who appear to Sainte-Beuve as the heirs of the humanist tradition.It is then shown how the passionate search for a new faith actually derives from the materialist side of Saint-Simonism. The author emphasizes the fact that the changes brought about in the world by science and technology altered the very way of setting a problem. This has particular application to the Saint-Simonian doctrine. Indeed, the new religion which that doctrine held to be so necessary is a result of its positive attitude to the material world. The interest of Saint-Simonism in the world is an interest in society — as nowhere else in the tradition examined in this article.

Die Psychologie des Raisonnements hat bisher keine zureichende Beachtung gefunden. Das Raisonnement wurde nur als eine innersubjektive Reflexion oder als eine Beziehung zwischen dem Individuum und den gegebenen Sachen behandelt, nicht aber als ein weitgehend durch die gesellschaftliche Situation des Individuums begründetes Verhalten. Die Arbeit von H. will diesen Aspekt zur Diskussion stellen. H. unterscheidet das Raisonnement, das auf „sentiment“ und „passion“ beruht, von dem „raisonnement intellectuel“. Während letzteres nach den allgemeinsten logischen Grundprinzipien verfährt und dementsprechend Allgemeingültigkeit beansprucht, benutzt ersteres als Prämissen bestimmte Urteile und Anschauungen, die nur für einzelne Gruppen der Gesellschaft Gültigkeit haben, und wendet sie auf den individuellen Fall an. H. versucht, einige gesellschaftliche Charaktere dieses Raisonnements herauszuarbeiten. Erläutert wird die Unterscheidung der beiden Arten von Raisonnement an Hand von Paretos Begriff der nichtlogischen Handlung und durch die Kategorien der „résidus“ und „dérivats“.The psychology of reasoning (raisonnement) has not received special attention. Reasoning is analyzed only as inner subjective reflection or as a relationship between the individual and given subjects, not as an activity based largely on the social situation of the individual. This article discusses the latter aspect. H. differentiates reasoning based on „sentiment“ or „passion“ from „intellectual reasoning.“ The latter follows general logical principles and therefore lays claim to universal validity, whereas the former type has as its premises specific judgments and notions which are valid only for individual groups in society and it applies these premises to the individual case. H. seeks to work out certain social characteristics of the latter type. The distinction between the two sorts of reasoning is developed with the views of Pareto's concept of non-logical activity and the categories of „residues“ and „derivatives“.
