The Dummett-Lash Debate and Unmediated Revelation

W artykule streszczam tzw.
In the article, I summarize the so-called “Dummett - Lash debate” that took place in the pages of the English Catholic journal New Blackfriars in the years 1987-1989. I discern three main streams of the debate. In the first, the main opponent of philosopher Michael Dummett, the initiator of the debate, was Benedectine Bede Griffith, who proposed a symbolic way of understanding the Bible. Dummett responded that any symbolic understanding depends on a previous literal understanding, which therefore cannot be rejected. In the second stream, Dummett argued that we need intersubjective justification of our belonging to a particular Church, because otherwise we could not give any reasons why those who don’t profess Christianity should change their views. His main point wasn’t challenged, but some participants of the debate questioned some details of the nature of this justification and entire paradigm of thinking in confessional terms. The third and focal point of the debate was Dummett’s insistence that contemporary Catholic biblical studies depart from traditional Catholic teaching and therefore it is necessary to pronounce the limits of admissible reinterpretation of the articles of Catholic faith. Many theologians who took part in the debate saw this as a threat to academic freedom, and the most important of them, University of Cambridge Professor Nicholas Lash, pointed out that Dummett’s pronouncement also needs interpretation, since otherwise establishing the limits of possible reinterpretation would be simply impossible. In the end of the article, I come to the conclusion that we can see Dummett both as a philosopher who tries to treat religion rationally and as a simple Catholic layman who wants to have direct access to revelation without the mediation of biblical experts.

How Two Become One? Pavel Florensky’s Concept of Identity

Pavel Florensky attempted to formulate an ontological theory of love. He believed that love is not merely a psychological phenomenon but also implies a kind of real unification. Florensky proposed to understand the latter in terms of consubstantiality. Two numerically distinct subjects might become one in virtue of their numerically identical essence. Besides that Florensky sketched an ontological theory based on the distinction between things and persons. It seems that he held a bundle theory of objects, a trope nominalism for things, and a substrate theory combined with realism for persons. Florensky’s view might be therefore taken as a position in the debate on the principle of the identity of indiscernibles. Finally, I suggest that the serious philosophical and theological problems of Florensky’s ontology of love might be overcome by adding to his theory the patristic distinction between essence and energies.

Criticism of a Certain Form of Contemporary Deism as a New Religion Project in a Globalized World

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest krytyczna prezentacja głównych tez pewnej wersji współczesnego deizmu, zaproponowanej przez Roberta Corfe’a, autora książki Deism and Social Ethics: The Role of Religion in the Third Millennium.
In his essay entitled Deism and Social Ethics: The Role of Religion in the Third Millennium, Robert Corfe presents a contemporary version of deism. His concept is not a simple continuation of eighteenth-century English deism, but is a considerably modified theory, taking into account modern achievements of the natural sciences. The author believes that the main threat to world peace comes from conflicts between followers of the largest monotheistic religions like Islam and Christianity. A main task of contemporary deism would be the construction of agreement among the large religious communities in the world by means of continuous rational persuasion. Above all, the proposed deism would be a global ethics, related to an impersonal cosmic Deity (the Good). Simultaneously, it would break with all supernatural religions (theologies) based on different revelations. These latter are the source of irrationalism according to Corfe. It would be much better to replace them with a suprahuman rationalism discovered in Nature and deriving from Divine Reason immanently existing in the Universe. Corfe’s deism would be an alternative to atheism, popularized among educated men in Western countries. Also his deism is addressed to all people, who are making now political and economic decisions in a globalized world. As such, his deism can be a great worldwide ideology, especially useful for those who have an influence on the fate of the contemporary world. In this article are presented the main features of the above-mentioned version of deism, as well as a critical assessment of this type of deism, including a discussion of hidden and controversial presuppositions. It is found that this version of deism is not as persuasive and rational as its author thinks.

Political Secularism and the Debate about the Status of Conscientious Convictions

W artykule rekonstruuję podstawowe elementy koncepcji „sekularyzmu otwartego” przedstawionej przez Jocelyna Maclure’a i Charlesa Taylora w książce Secularism and Freedom of Conscience (2011).
In the paper, the basic elements of the conception of “open secularism” presented by J. Mac- lure and Ch. Taylor in their book Secularism and Freedom of Conscience (2011) are described. I point out that one of the defining feature of Maclure’s and Taylor’s theory of political secularism consists in supporting the “accommodation measures” which aim at protecting the freedom of conscience. In the next part of the article the main standpoints of the debate concerning the status of conscientious convictions are characterized and the “subjective” account of the freedom of conscience put forward by Maclure and Taylor is presented. In the following part of the paper Cecile Laborde’s critique of the subjective freedom of religion and Maclure’s reply is summarized. In the last part of the paper I try to show that the presentation of the subjective account of conscientious convictions in Secularism and Freedom of Conscience cannot be reconciled with Taylor’s conception of“strong evaluations”.

Philosophyas a Humanistic Discipline
abstract |

Jest on swoistym testamentem filozoficznym autora Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy, w którym przedstawia swoją wizję filozofiijako dziedziny humanistycznej.
This text was delivered by Williams as a lecture to The Royal Institute of Philosophy on 23 February 2000, three years before Williams' passing. It can be understood as a philosophical testament of the author of Ethics and The Limits of Philosophy, in which he presents his vision of philosophy as a humanistic discipline. According to Williams there are serious reasons supporting the rejection of extreme metaphilosophical positions such as scientism, relativism or pragmatism. Advocates of those standpoints misconceive the essential differences between philosophy and science, and as a consequence they are unable to formulate an outlook that would allow us to acquire a meaningful understanding of ourselves and of our various intellectual and practical activities. The basic mistake here is to ignore the fact that science has a theory of error, which allows us to interpret its historical development as a process motivated by epistemic reasons, while philosophical concepts also undergo various non-epistemic determinations, especially determination by history and culture. Williams does not think that it is a sufficient reason to reject philosophy. Science may be superior to philosophy in cognitive aspects; however, it is unable to provide us with a rich self-understanding, a task that can and should be the aim of philosophy, if only we abandon attempts to liken it to science and focus on the most important facts about human beings—mainly, that we are not purely rational intelligences, but flesh-and-blood beings shaped by our biology, psychology, history and culture, beings that have many complex needs that can't be reduced to purely cognitive ones.

Jephthah’s Plight: Moral Dilemmas and Theism
abstract |

Natomiast w odniesieniu do pierwszej opcji artykuł zamykają uwagi dotyczące sposobu opracowania normatywnej teorii etycznej o charakterze teistycznym, która uznaje istnienie dylematów moralnych. Teiści zainteresowani taką teorią powinni poważnie rozważyć odrzucenie założenia, że powinność implikuje możliwość.
This essay examines the phenomenon of moral dilemmas from a theistic perspective. Many theists have supposed either (1) that a providential God would never confront a creature with a choice in which the creature cannot avoid doing wrong, or (2) that if a creature does confront such a choice situation, it is the result of some prior wrongdoing freely committed by that creature. This second alternative has been ascribed by many to St. Thomas Aquinas. I argue that the ascription is unwarranted, citing among other cases Aquinas’s examination of Jephthah’s vow in the book of Judges. As for the first alternative, the essay concludes with some observations about how one might develop a theistic normative ethical theory, consistent with God’s providence, that recognizes moral dilemmas. One of the assumptions that theists should seriously consider abandoning in the process is the principle that ought implies can.
