The Neuronal Machine of the Cerebral Cortex as a Substrate of Psychic Functions

Neural centers are built according to two conflicting principles: (1) a modular organization with a strictly determined and highly specific internal and intermodular connectivity, which is superseded (2) by a "quasi random" reciprocally symmetric connexion system acting over distances of 10 moduls. Emergence of "dynamic patterns" of activity is highly probable in such a system, which may account for a while class of hitherto unknown phenomena of higher hierarchical order that might be both the results and the causes of modified functional states in parts of the neural network.
