RIGHTS & PERMISSIONS

Statement of Copyright Policy

The Journal of Philosophy is a copyrighted periodical. We would like to draw your attention to the protection copyright affords against multiple photocopying by libraries, instructors, and copy centers. The 1976 copyright law provides that photocopies in excess of "fair use" copying cannot be made without authorization by the copyright owner—"fair use" meaning single copying for personal use. Accordingly, the Journal authorizes personal or educational multiple copying only if a request is made in writing, and the fee of $.10 per page/per copy is paid directly to us. Each copy must include a notice of copyright. We shall turn over to the authors of papers published through the end of 2022 any substantial payments (over $30.00, an administrative fee) obtained from all photocopying. Inquiries about photocopying may be sent to [email protected].

It is the policy of the Journal to grant to any reputable publisher the right to reprint any of our articles, but only under the condition that the permission of the author is obtained. We ask that publishers interested in reprinting any Journal material send a request in writing to [email protected]. We request that photocopies of all correspondence relative to reprint requests be sent to the author in question; upon request, we will supply the contact information of the author in question for publishers. We ask all publishers for a royalty fee, currently $10.00 per Journal page, to be collected by us on behalf of the author, plus an administrative fee for the Journal, currently a flat $30.00 fee per article; these fees are subject to change and are currently applicable to papers published through the end of 2022

Electronic Publishing

The Journal currently grants permission to publishers for the use of our copyrighted material in digital form on a case-by-case basis only. For use in electronic course packs, access to copyrighted materials should be password-protected and limited to currently enrolled students.

To Our Authors, Concerning Copyright

It is the policy of The Journal of Philosophy that authors transfer copyright to The Journal of Philosophy, Inc. Authors are generally permitted to reprint their articles in books at no fee; but we ask that you give us notice of any direct negotiations with publishers regarding the reprinting of an article of yours on which we hold copyright.

At any time after an article has been accepted and a copyright agreement has been completed, authors are allowed to post a pre-review version of the article manuscript to websites as long as the Journal copyright is acknowledged; such use does not extend, however, to permission for the host site (such as a university server) to repackage any Journal copyrighted material with other electronic content for whatever reason–educational, commercial, or otherwise.

Author Self-Archiving Policy

After an embargo period of one year from publication, authors may self-archive a non-formatted version of their article manuscript as accepted by The Journal of Philosophy in their affiliated institution's repository and/or non-profit subject-area repository. A "non-formatted version" of a manuscript means a version in a format that does not duplicate the look and feel of the Journal (such as ASCII TXT, HTML, Word). We cannot grant permission for the use of any file format that reproduces page images from the Journal (such as TIF, PDF, JPEG). Posting a non-formatted version of the manuscript allows authors to make their work more widely known without asking a non-profit journal to bear the cost and risk of free distribution.

Please include the following notice on the first page of your manuscript:

"This is the peer-reviewed version of the following article: [FULL CITATION], which has been published in final form at [Link to final article using the DOI]. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes only."

Need to find an article DOI? Search our electronic collection or use Crossref's guest query tool.

If you have any questions about this copyright policy please contact the Journal's editorial office.
