Tourism Business and Human Needs in Tanzania

This paper traces the historical background of tourism business in Tanzania pointing out its importance and problems associated with. Since, most of tourism business in Tanzania is wildlife-based, the expansion of national parks and game reserves has resulted in an increasing displacement of people and disruption of their livelihood. This has resulted into a conflict between the government, conservation authorities and the local people who were marginalized in the use of park resources. In order to harmonize the situation the government through Selous Game Reserve project has introduced "Community Management" approach which takes into consideration tourism business and human needs of the local people within the "buffer zones". As a pilot study the model has proved to be successful in terms of people’s participation, wildlife conservation and human needs. Thus it is submitted that the future of Tourism business in Tanzania will depend not only on the international society but also on the local community.
