We propose a new approach to conditional donkey sentences that allows us to face successfully the often called proportion problem. The main ingredients of the proposal are van Benthem’s generalized quantifier approach to conditionals (van Benthem, 1984), and Barwise’s situation semantics (Barwise, 1989). We present some experimental data supporting our proposal.

Bourbaki showed us the potential inherent within the concept of mathematical structure for re-organizing, systematically arranging and unifying the mathematical framework. But mathematics’ development in recent decades has flagged up the limitations of this approach. In this article we analyse Bourbaki’s contributions to what we term the “internal” foundations of mathematics, and at the same time we indicate where, in our view, they fall short. We go on to outline some of the evidence on which we base the viewpoint termed structural functionalism. According to the latter, the general notion of morphism characterizes the dynamic nature of present-day mathematics.

Machery and some collaborators have used survey data to criticize Kripke’s anti-descriptivism about proper names. I highlight a number of drawbacks in the tests of Machery et al. Some of my objections concern their ambiguity. In particular, the responses that —according to them— reveal descriptivist intuitions can be interpreted as anti-descriptivist responses, for reasons that —as far as I know— have not been pointed out so far. Furthermore, their vignettes are apparently inconsistent. I also discuss other issues related to the role of intuitions in philosophy; Machery et al.’s theses depend on an unjustified assumption: there is not expertise regarding intuitions.

In this paper, I explore the possibility of applying the methods and results of Judgement Aggregation to the problem of logical disagreement. I develop and evaluate different ways in which individuals who logically disagree can generate a collective logic. I prove a version of the discursive paradox, where the majority voting of a group of structural logicians can give rise to a substructural logic; then I develop a more general impossibility result. After this, I analyze different ways to avoid the paradox, in particular some methods which appeal to domain restrictions. Finally, I consider the application of these results to the discussion on semantic paradoxes.

The notion of emergence has accompanied philosophy of science since the late xix century, claiming that in some systems there are properties in certain levels that cannot be deduced from properties of their components as seen in more fundamental levels. Throughout the xx century, emergence has been characterized by four pillars: unpredictability, novelty, restriction and downward causation. These four pillars have been related to the assumption of a hierarchical order of reality in different levels of organization. In this paper, we show that it is possible to explain the nature of the (apparent) emergent properties through the nearly-decomposability criterion introduced by Herbert Simon.

Two entities are weakly discernible when there is an irreflexive and symmetric relation holding between them. That weak discernibility holds in quantum mechanics is fairly uncontroversial nowadays. The ontological consequences of weak discernibility, however, are far from clear. Recently, part of the literature seems to imply that weak discernibility points to a definite metaphysics to quantum mechanics. In this paper we shall discuss the metaphysical contribution of weak discernibility to the metaphysics of quantum mechanics and argue that, contrary to part of current literature, it does not provide for a fully naturalistic determination of the theory’s metaphysics. Underdetermination still obtains.
