Our aim in this essay is to take a look at cartoons under philosophical light. What are some of the similarities between philosophy and the art of cartooning? In what ways can cartoons be helpful to philosophy? What are some of the problems cartoons pose for philosophy? Perhaps the most basic philosophical question concerning cartoons is, “What is a cartoon?”. We argue that it is not easy to pin down necessary and sufficient conditions for something being a cartoon. We defend the view that cartoons form a class whose members are interconnected with the Wittgensteinian “family resemblance” relations. We then look into the problems involved in finding a connectionist parallel-processing correlate of the Wittgensteinian notion in the context of cartoons.

In Nicomachean Ethics X.7, Aristotle argues that perfect happiness consists in contemplation alone. The question that I want to take up in this essay is whether the superiority of contemplative life fits with Aristotle’s argument for the self-sufficiency of the political life, according to which politics can lead us to happiness without being guided by philosophical knowledge of the highest sort. My basic argument is that, paradoxical as it may seem, Aristotle is led to acknowledge that contemplative life is superior to political life by the same strand of argumentation which makes him plea for the self-sufficiency of the political life in the first place. In order to show how this argument unfolds, I take my point of departure from Aristotle’s analysis of phronēsis as stated in Nicomachean Ethics VI and bring it to bear on his discussion of the respective virtues of the contemplative and political ways of life in Politics VII.

Alain Badiou who one of the remarkable French philosopher of contemporary period is tries to maintain philosophy and its basis is the idea of truth against the every claim of last. This preservation is nor a conservative attitude or not a nostalgia for the history of philosophy. It is realized by take into consideration the four basic condition of philosophy and in the current era. Badiou is trying to submit a philosophical attitude that it will be able to deal with the crisis of philosophy as well as socio-cultural, economic and political problems of era. Consequently determination of what philosophy should be is required to struggle with the philosophy trends of era and approaches to philosophy. This requirement is lead Badiou to explain to definition, purpose, conditions of philosophy and desire for philosophy. As a result the philosopy of Badiou is contemporary Platonism opposite to contemporary sofism which under the influence of Nietzsche, Heidegger and Wittgenstein.

Text is beginning with the problem of human will of rebellion, which is having from the fall from heaven on. This exactly is an approach which makes interruption on chronologic time and which is Messianic on the sense of Benjamin. This Messianic interruption, on the hereafter of text was reconciled with Nietzschean eternal return, processed with the time view of Blanchot and Derrida. Finally with mentioning of creating temporal interruption is the ethical manner, this condition will be explained with the “cutting” process on cinema. At this point, the aim is presenting of the human’s rebellion condition’s is actually always presented on him and is the structure which waiting to be come to present with ethical manner.

In the standard and traditional view, the concept of conditional probability is defined with what is known as the ratio formula: the probability of B given A is the ratio between the probability of A and B and the probability of A. It is well known that this definition does not match the conceptual and mathematical expectations that we have from conditional probability, especially for the probability values at the limits. Thus, as pointed out by several philosophers such as Popper and Hájek, it is fair to conclude that we have yet to have a satisfactory definition for the concept of conditional probability. E.J. Lowe, in a debate with Dorothy Edgington, proposed two different definitions of conditional probability, and unfortunately his definitions have gone unnoticed in the literature. In this paper, my main aim is to renew interest in Lowe’s definitions. I achieve this aim by showing that E.J. Lowe’s definitions have great potential in providing us with a satisfactory definition of conditional probability.

One of the main targets of Heidegger throughout Being and Time is to try to make manifest the fact that time, which is the horizon in which being reveals itself, belongs to the very essence of human beings. In Fundamental Concepts of Metaphysics, which was published in the following two years after the publication of his magnum opus, this same theme is retained by means of the examination concerning the concepts of boredom and world. The notion of deep boredom, which will be the main theme of this paper, can be thought of as the equivalent of the phenomenon of anxiety that comes forward in Being and Time. Dasein, whose essence is its existence, responds its lack of an ontological ground by means of boredom. Three types of boredom can be considered, which can hierarchicly be put in order according to their depths; which, in its turn, increases as the object becomes more and more obscure. An examination of these three provides us with a clearer understanding of the conception of attunement, which refers to the total givenness of the world to Dasein by means of a mood. The basic mood of the contemporary man can be conceived as boredom in the face of deep boredom. Relegating deep boredom, which is apt to make manifest the deep ontological truth of his being, to the level of a psychological desease , man proves himself to be the being who is prone to evade in the face of himself.

A Hungarian philosopher, a literature historian and critic, Lukacs was one of the prominent philosophers influencing the direction of Marxist philosophy and theory. He contributed to this theory by studying on relation between Marxist class theory and conscious and particularly by developing the category of ideology. This main aim of this article is to understand and explore the way that the category of ideology was studied by Georgy Lukacs while focusing on his metatheoretical standpoint. In this sense, the questions on particular place of Lukacs in the Marxism of the twentieth century and his contribution to this philosophy will be asked. Conscious, subject-object relation, social classes will be taken as the key concepts contributing to exploration of Lukacs’ theory of ideology in responses to the questions.

Self-assertion of the modern universities is the essential requirement of the capitalist and market economy based contemporary world. This problem that is claimed clearly in Heidegger’s famous rector speech is primarily concerned with analyzing urgently the relationship between knowledge, education, and thinking. Such a relationship always opens each of them as an aporia. Then the source of it should only be sought in the philosophical tradition of thinking known as Western metaphysics. Here’s the basic problem: In respect of the present conditions how can we understand philosophy and then how can we determine the importance of education in terms of philosophy? This is an urgent question for questioning courageously and making a radical explanation on the relationship between philosophy and education. We are faced with the fact that we look at in this context that the philosophical tradition and its metaphysical history has a rational and so logo-phallo-centrical character. But on the other hand, as is done today to understand philosophy as simply a worldview is not true also. That’s why, both Heidegger and Derrida stressed the need to dissolve, dissect, or disperse metaphysics radically. Therefore, knowledge, education and thinking triple bond may arise in the metaphysical tradition. It is important here that the knowledge is replaced by thinking. Now knowledge has been a priority. Thinking is only to serve it. As a result of that, today university is defined only with knowledge. In other words, questioning was abandoned the university. To ressolve and clearly reveal this issue Heidegger insists on the ontological necessity of the self-assertion of the modern universities. On the other hand, Derrida vehemently claims that the value of philosophical thinking and right to philosophy in universities and all other educational institutions in general.

Bu makalede Heidegger’in metafizik düşünce geleneğine ilişkin eleştirisi, onun sanat yapıtı üzerine yorumları bağlamında tartışmaya açılıyor. Batı metafizik düşüncesinin varolanların Varlığını düşünülemez kılarak, Varlığın hakikatinin üzerini nasıl örttüğünün anlaşılabilmesi için Heidegger’in kadim Yunandaki sanat yapıtına döndüğünü ve batı metafizik geleneğini aşabilmek için sanat aracılığıyla bu dönemin Varlık anlayışını ortaya koyduğu gösterilmeye çalışılacaktır. Böylece makale Heidegger’in sanat yapıtını otantik anlamda nasıl ele aldığını vurgulamak suretiyle Varlığın anlamının da nasıl anlaşılması gerektiğini göstermeye çalışacaktır.In this paper, Heidegger’s criticism of the tradition of metaphysical thinking is opened to discussion in the context of his interpretation of the work of art. In order to understand how Western metaphysical thought conceals the truth of Being by rendering unthinkable the Being of the beings, this paper will attempt to show that Heidegger turns to ancient Greek art and elaborates the ancient Greek understanding of Being through the art of the period in order to transcend the western metaphysical tradition. This paper will also attempt to show how the meaning of Being must be understood by emphasizing how Heidegger treats the work of art in its authentic meaning.

The concept of ‘meaning’ constitutes the central theme of Wittgenstein’s philosophy. Wittgenstein, who characterizes meaning on the basis of an extra-linguistic reality in Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, in the later period of his philosophy, characterizes meaning by use. This transition, which Wittgenstein calls “bring the question ‘what is meaning’ down to earth”, rests on his concept of grammar. Autonomy of language is an important consequence of this transition. In this paper Wittgenstein’s conception of grammar and autonomy of language which results from this conception will be explicated. To this end first the role of the concept of grammar in Wittgenstein’s philosophy will be clarified and then on the basis of this what is meant by the autonomy of language will be explained.

There are two claims that are central to McGinn’s mysterianism: (1) there is a naturalist and constructive solution of the mind-body problem, and (2) we human beings are incapable in principle of solving the mind-body problem. I believe (1) and (2) are compatible: the truth of one does not entail the falsity of the other. However, I will argue that the reasons McGinn presents for thinking that (2) is true are incompatible with the truth of (1), at least on a fairly standard conception of the terms ‘naturalist’ and ‘constructive’, which McGinn himself seems to take for granted.

The problem of relationship between perception and concepts is known with Kantian heritage. Here, what is called object, emerged in the way of the function of synthetical unity of the mind. Then our question becomes could the operation of adding the conceptual to the given in perception be the only function of mind? If it were so, (giving the explanation of) explaining the relationship between perception and concepts would hardly be possible. Since in this case a third causal function should be required to construct the relationship between external-sensorial and internal-conceptual. Thus, this requirement could only mean that mind is a conceptual apparatus. However, (mind has many other functions alongside the conceptual-theoretical function) conceptual-theoretical function is not the only function that mind does have. That is, perception could not only be limited as the perception of the object. Concept as a mental process is not different from perception; rather perception itself is a mental process too. According to Kant concepts are a priori and I agree with this view. Yet, here the point is to decide how concepts are a priori and how sensation affects concepts. Once this question is answered, (it could be possible to throw light to) the relationship between concepts and sensation could be illuminated. This problem also could be solved by investigating the more archaic functions of perception. In this context I am taking into consideration expressive-function in terms of the relationship between perception and concept. In this paper, I will address the above mentioned view in terms of Ernst Cassirer’s philosophy of mind which I define (this) as a kind of ‘functionalism.’

According to Wallerstein, the tripartite division between the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities is no longer as self-evident as it once seemed. Therefore, some of the original epistemological debates which is now thought to have been left in the past arise again. But this time these debates are not purely theoretical discussions. When epistemologists begin to resolve the epistemological debates, they are in need of deciding what to do organizationally. For Wallerstein, the most immediate question is related to the organizational structure of the social sciences themselves. What is more, ‘interdisciplinarity’ is not an answer to this question. The most significant consequence of this epistemological debate has been the call for social science that is based on the concept of ‘multiple-paradigm’. The question that comes to the light under this concept is how to take seriously a plurality of paradigms in social science without losing the main idea of the science. On the other hand, a multi-paradigmatic science will only thrive if it is legitimated as much it is legitimated as organizationally. The limitedness of the positivist approach is an obstacle to answering this kind of questions. As for the epistemological postmodern scepticism, it sometimes leads to an antagonism of theory which condemns the other perspectives equally critical of the limitedness of the positivist approach. The solution seems to involve arguing the concept of multiple-paradigm within the existing theories of knowledge while simultaneously establishing new avenues for dialogue and exchange between and beyond the existing theories. Popperian approach is one of these theories, and this article’s aim is to analyse it on the base of Wallerstein’s idea that the social sciences should embrace a very wide opening to research and teach on all paradigms in the search for renewed, expanded, and meaningful pluralistic universalism.

In this paper, the relationship between belief and experience will be investigated because on the one hand, experience creates a source for beliefs which leads knowledge and on the other hand it makes the experience possible, which leads human actions. Considering the analysis of two prominent analytic philosophers Davidson and Wittgenstein, the relationship of belief and experience, and the questionable nature of this relationship will be studied. The basic claim of this paper consists of the following primary idea: Contrary to what is believed, neither experiences form a firm and certain basis for beliefs, nor experiences are in need of beliefs to be known.

The concept of reason has a central importance in the social philosophy of Max Horkheimer, one of the leading representatives of Frankfurt School and who laid the foundation for critical theory and defined its theoretical framework. He ultimately attached social and cultural deterioration which he sees in the Western world to the degeneration of reason. In this study, Horkheimer’s understanding of reason, which is based on the distinction between subjective and objective reason, is examined by associating it with the problem of truth and dialectic’s role is discussed in reconciliation of these two ideas of reason.
