The reception of the heliocentric theory of Nicolaus Copernicus in Jewish thought of the 17th century period is a good exemplification of the issue concerning the formation of the relationship between natural science and theology, or more broadly: between science and religion. The fundamental question concerning this relationship, which we can ask from today’s perspective of this problem, is: How does it happen that claims of a scientific nature, which are initially considered from a religious point of view to be incompatible with the religious view of the world, are later accepted as possible to agree with this image of reality and are assimilated by a given religion? Based on the reception of the Copernican image of the universe by two representatives of Jewish philosophy in the 17th century—David Gans and Joseph Solomon Delmedigo—it is possible to trace this process and pose the thesis that it takes place according to two strategies. Within the framework of the first one, represented by Gans, in a situation of incompatibility between the scientific and religious images of nature, a scientific theory is sought that explains the observed phenomena and, on the other hand, satisfies the religious claims. Finding such a theory solves the problem of the incompatibility mentioned above of images of the world, gives the theory credibility from the religious point of view and constitutes an argument for its correctness. The second strategy, represented by Delmedigo, consists in refraining from pursuing a direct, immediate, and unequivocal reconciliation of the two images of the world while at the same time recognizing a properly justified scientific theory as correctly describing and explaining the phenomena occurring in nature. Consequently, the apparent incompatibility between the scientific and the religious worldview demands either a reformulation of religious statements in such a way as to remove this incompatibility or the restriction of the meaning of religious statements to the strictly religious and moral sphere, without the ambition to speak about nature. In either case, however, it is already a task for the representatives of the religion concerned who, when confronted with adequately justified scientific claims, to avoid exposing their religion to the accusation that its claims are unreasonable and anachronistic, undertake the task mentioned above of modifying or limiting the scope of their statements. It seems that in the representatives of Jewish thought and Judaism, who are the successors of Gans and Delmedigo, generally speaking, the second strategy has prevailed in this version, in which one abandons the claim of religion to statements about the material world at the price of a significant divergence of the paths of science and religion. Consequently, it treats them as different narratives, describing and explaining two separate spheres of reality.

Krytyczna Analiza Neurokognitywnych Podstaw Modlitwy

In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in the interest taken by experimental researchers in issues that have traditionally belonged to the sphere of interest of the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of cognition, and even the theology of spirituality. The availability of new research methods, as well as the increase in the knowledge of the world, has opened another door to the reality in which we live. By studying the functioning of the human brain in specific laboratory conditions, scientists are looking for the answers to questions that have been troubling us for centuries: what consciousness is, how do we recognize intentions, and what are spiritual experiences? This article deals with the topic of prayer as a specific religious experience in the context of neurocognitive research. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the frequency of such studies has increased significantly; for example, through the experiments of Nina Azari, Mario Beauregard, and Andrew B. Newberg. Selected experiments in the field of the neuroscience of spirituality and their results are discussed. Important philosophical questions about how we define prayer and other spiritual experiences in the context of the above research, the interdisciplinary nature of the research, as well as emerging problems and implications, e.g., the risk of reducing these phenomena to their biological base, the explanations of religious practices and experiences in cognitive science of religion have also been raised.
W ostatnich dziesięcioleciach nastąpił znaczny wzrost zainteresowania badaczy eksperymentalnych zagadnieniami, które tradycyjnie należały do kręgu zainteresowań filozofii umysłu, filozofii poznania, a nawet teologii duchowości. W XX i XXI wieku częstotliwość takich badań znacznie wzrosła; na przykład poprzez eksperymenty Niny Azari, Mario Beauregarda i Andrew B. Newberga.

Truth and Normativity

The category of truth has been controversial since ancient philosophy until the contemporary one. Discussions on the correspondence classical theory of truth have given rise to non-classical theories combining the notion of truth with evidence, a useful action, coherence or a common agreement etc. A sharp polemics has tried to eliminate at all the category of truth. The question arises whether such a radical criticism is right and justified? It seems that it is exaggerated. The goal of this article is an argumentation for the thesis that truth — as a value and a norm (“a pattern”, an element of a reference system etc.) — is indispensable for the epistemic evaluation of propositions which have their theoretical and practical consequences. The structure of the article is fixed by the following paragraphs: (1) the criticism of the category of truth, (2) truth as a value and (3) truth as a norm in a reference system. At the starting point I take a compact characteristics of truth formed by Michael P. Lynch in his monograph entitled True to Life: Why Truth Matters (2020): (a) Truth is objective. (b) Truth is a value, truth is good. (c) Truth is a valuable goal of inquiry. (d) Truth is valuable itself. In fact truth is valuable because it makes it possible to claim that someone is not right, lies, commits perjury, misleads someone in private or social life. Apart from that without the category of truth it is even impossible to claim — as scepticism maintains — that it is true that truth is not valuable, noteworthy etc. The category of truth — which plays a role of a cognitive goal and of a norm — despite various controversies is still indispensable for the evaluation of a logical value of sentences (and propositions expressed by them). The category of truth is semantic, but its recognition — someone’s acknowledging of a sentence as true (i.e. an assertion) — is a pragmatic category. Asserted post factum efficiency of an action — undertaken on the basis of a sentence — is a strong reason for acknowledging it as true. The respect for truth is better that the lack of it.

Are There “Nonresistant Nonbelievers”? Theistic Answer
abstract |

In Jacek Wojtysiak’s complex argument against the hiddenness argument of J.L.Schellenberg includes the premise of the existence of “nonresistant nonbelievers”. In this article, I present reasons why the classical theist should not accept this premise. Otherwise, he would have to assume that God is to blame for the existence of “nonresistant nonbelievers”. And this leads to the destructive conclusion for the theist that the Christian God is not a God of the omni-attributes.

An (Un)equal Arguments Exchange

W swojej książce Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej Jacek Wojtysiak podejmuje temat Bożego ukrycia.
In his book Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej [Between Hiddenness and Openness: An Essay in the Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Theology] Jacek Wojtysiak takes up the issue of divine hiddenness. In the opening chapters he enters into a polemic with the argument of J.L. Schellenberg, who from the existence of reasonable unbelief draws the conclusion that God does not exist. In order to neutralize this argument, Wojtysiak reverses it, constructing an argument for the existence of God from the fact of the existence of reasonable believers, and then strengthens it to an argument from the great fact of faith (and its subsequent versions). I argue that Wojtysiak’s reversed arguments (from reasonable believers and from the great fact of faith) are not symmetrical to the initial argument from reasonable nonbelievers, because they are weaker. I point out that some of Wojtysiak’s arguments can be reversed by an atheist. I also raise the point that the conclusion of Wojtysiak’s final arguments is not satisfactory to a theist.

The Fact of Faith or the Great Fact of Faith? Comments on the book by Jacek Wojtysiak Między ukryciem a jawnością [Between Hiddenness and Openness]

John L. Schellenberg, the author of the hiddenness argument, argues that if God existed, there would be no genuine nonbelievers. In his latest book, Jacek Wojtysiak states that a theist can reverse this reasoning and say that if God did not exist, there would be no genuine believers. He not only concludes that there are believers, it can be assumed that there are many more of them than nonbelievers. Thus, he can state the existence of the great fact of faith, against which the atheist is doubly helpless: firstly, he cannot explain it, and secondly, he is unable to present a parallel argument for atheism. In my article, I analyze the part of Wojtysiak’s book that is devoted to these issues and I come to the conclusion that an atheist is in a better position than the Polish philosopher suggests.

On the Fact of Faith

Jacek Wojtysiak argues that by claiming the great fact of faith one can demonstrate the superiority of theism over atheism. Against this view, I formulate three objections: an objection from the statistical yearbook, an objection from the inconsiderable fact of faith, and an objection from nonempirical reasons. The objection from the statistical yearbook draws attention to the fact that the greatness of a fact of faith is always relativized to the moment in time at which it is stated. And this raises the question of which fact the theist should invoke. The objection from the inconsiderable fact of faith suggests that, in the dispute between theism and atheism, it does not matter whether the fact of faith is pluralizable, and thus how many entities are involved. The objection from non-empirical reasons promotes the view that establishing the empirical circumstances of certain religions does not bring the theists and atheists closer to resolving their debate.

Universality of Faith and Immoral Believers

W pierwszej przedstawiam argument J.L. Schellenberga z „Bożej ukrytości” oraz rekonstruuję argumentację J. Wojtysiaka z „wielkiego faktu wiary”. W drugiej części próbuję pokazać, że istnienie niemoralnych wierzących podważa tezę o powszechności wiary w teistycznego Boga. W trzeciej części przedstawiam oba argumenty jako wspierające tezę ultymizmu.
Of the many issues that Jacek Wojtysiak addressed in his new book Między ukryciem a jawnością [Between Hiddenness and Openness] (2023), the polemic with John L. Schellenberg regarding the problem of God’s hiddenness deserves special attention. Schellenberg in an ingenious way wants to show that the very existence of atheists tests the truth of the thesis about the existence of a personal God. In response, J. Wojtysiak reverses J.L. Schellenberg’s argument, claiming that the universality of faith tests an atheist’s conviction. The aim of the article is to show that just as the proper conclusion of J.L. Schellenberg’s argument is not an atheistic thesis, J. Wojtysiak’s argument does not actually defend theism. It would rather be said about both arguments that they are arguments that support ultimism. The article consists of three parts. In the first one, I present Schellenberg’s argument from “God's hiddenness” and reconstruct J. Wojtysiak’s argument from the “great fact of faith.” In the second part, I try to show that the existence of immoral believers undermines the thesis about the universality of belief in a theistic God. In the third part, I present both arguments as supporting the ultimism thesis.

In his book Między ukryciem a jawnością [Between Hiddenness and Openness] (2023), Professor Jacek Wojtysiak argues that on the assumption of atheistic naturalism, no convincing explanation can be given for the ‘great fact of faith,’ that is, the phenomenon of the historical persistence and universality of the belief in the existence of God. The purpose of this paper is to challenge this thesis. Drawing on selected theories from the field of the Cognitive Science of Religion, I sketch a naturalistic explanation of how religious belief arises.

Jacek Wojtysiak’s Criticism of Probabilistic Argument from Evil for the Non-Existence of God

In the article, I consider Jacek Wojtysiak’s critique of the probabilistic argument from the existence of a great fact of evil for the non-existence of God. I suggest that J. Wojtysiak’s critique of this argument should be modified in such a way that it does not lead to the conclusion that God is the cause of evil. I suggest to change the concept of God’s causality. I also point to a different way of weakening the probabilistic argument from evil than the one chosen by J. Wojtysiak. I propose to undermine the premise that evil exists, given naturalism. Next, I briefly refer to the difficulties of naturalistic moral realism and point to evolutionary arguments that debunk moral realism. In the context of these difficulties, I consider the position of Paul Draper, the pioneer of the probabilistic (Bayesian) argument from evil for atheism, and try to show some of the weaknesses of his views. I then formulate a theistic deductive argument from the existence of evil and suggest that, for reasons of simplicity, deductive over probabilistic arguments should be preferred by defenders of theism.

W książce Między ukryciem a jawnością. W niniejszym tekście wskazuję możliwe uzupełnienia i dopowiedzenia. Pokazuję także, w jaki sposób można by uzupełnić propozycję Autora, by możliwe było uniknięcie tych konsekwencji. Zwracam uwagę na wskazywane w dyskusjach wokół problemów zła i Bożej ukrytości niebezpieczeństwa związane z modyfikacją przypisywanego Bogu atrybutu dobroci. Dyskutuję zagadnienie „łaski kreacyjnej”, umieszczając je w nieco innym, niż to czyni Autor, kontekście.
In his book Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej [Between Hiddenness and Openness: An Essay in the Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Theology], Jacek Wojtysiak addresses, among other issues, the question of God’s goodness. He searches for the most convincing answer to the question of how to reconcile the great fact of evil with the existence of God. He also proposes a reinterpretation of the traditional account of God’s goodness by developing Brian Davies’ concept. I believe that J. Wojtysiak’s attempt can be supplemented with some relevant points. In my paper I indicate possible additions. I draw attention to the possible undesirable consequences of some of J, Wojtysiak’s proposed solutions. I also show how the Author’s proposal could be supplemented to avoid these consequences. I draw attention to the dangers of modifying the attribute of goodness attributed to God, which have been pointed out in discussions around the problems of evil and God’s hiddenness. I discuss the issue of 'creative grace', placing it in a context somewhat different from that of the Author. Finally, taking up the challenge thrown down by J, Wojtysiak of trying to reconcile the great fact of evil with God’s goodness, I present a proposal for a new treatment of the issue.

W świetle niektórych tez, wywodu i argumentacji zawartych w najnowszej książce Jacka Wojtysiaka Między ukryciem a jawnością.
In light of the argumentation and some of the theses introduced by Jacek Wojtysiak in his latest book Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej [Between Hiddenness and Openness: An Essay in the Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Theology], (2023), this article presents important components of the Christian concepts of the creative act and the God-world relationship as well as the consequences of this view for the expression of the essential elements of religious doctrine. I argue that it is impossible to create a world with (relative) autonomy and (relative) human freedom, in which there is no natural and moral evil. In this context, I emphasize not only the weight of an aspectual and rational approach to the Creator-creation relationship, but also the significance of the theory of kenosis, in which the act of creation is depicted as a kind of self-limitation of God.

The problem of the hiddenness of God is becoming an increasingly discussed philosophical topic. In my article, I would like to deal with the issue called by Jacek Wojtysiak (in his book Między jawnością a ukryciem [Between Hiddenness and Openness]) (WOJTYSIAK 2023) “testimonial knowledge” and connect it with Newman’s concept of implicit reasoning. Distinguishing between two types of reasoning — one spontaneous, practical, applicable to in the area of faith and morality, and the other: critical, analytical and retrospective, used in science, as well as in philosophy and theology — seems crucial to understanding the factual God’s hiddenness.

Faith, Evil, Testimonium: A Reply To the Discussants

Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej (WOJTYSIAK 2023).
The article is a response to ten texts in which objections or comments were made to my book Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej [Between Hiddenness and Openness: An Essay in the Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Theology] (WOJTYSIAK 2023). The response I divided into three thematic groups: the theistic argument from the great fact of faith, a critique of the atheistic argument from evil, and a defence of religion from its testimonial character. In the first part of the article, I defend the thesis that my theistic argument from the great fact of faith is, despite the difficulties put forward and thanks to its improvements, stronger than (formulated by J.L. Schellenberg) the atheistic argument from the fact of nonbelief. I still believe that theism best explains the fact of the universality and duration of belief in God or ‘something’ like Him. In the second part of the article, I justify the thesis that, properly understood, the principle of creative grace both allows us to expect evil in the world (to a similar degree to atheism) and does not violate our intuitions about the goodness of God. In addition, I defend the rationality of believing in a state of ‘original justice’. In the third part, I maintain my conviction that religion is one of those areas of life in which we are doomed to testimonial knowledge. Therefore, religion has prima facie epistemic value.

Czy Rothbardowska Teoria Kary Jest Retrybutywna?
abstract |

Murray Rothbard claims that it is “evident that our theory of proportional punishment—that people may be punished by losing their rights to the extent that they have invaded the rights of others—is frankly a retributive theory of punishment, a ‘tooth (or two teeth) for a tooth’ theory.” The present paper argues that it is not. The role that Rothbard assigns for victims in determining punishment justifies classifying his theory of punishment as corrective rather than retributive, for vesting victims with rights over punishment defeats the retributive justice requirement that criminals are punished solely because they deserve it and in accordance with their respective deserts. Instead of giving offenders what they objectively deserve, the Rothbardian theory of punishment allows victims to seek compensation in various forms, including revenge.

Multiversity, that Is Beyond Good and Evil in Science
abstract |

The university, as a bureaucratically and market-managed enterprise, has been the object of criticism since the 1980s. In the United States, Allan Bloom called it a multiversity, and some time later Bill Readings wrote about “The university in ruins,” hiding behind a façade of “excellence.” The Polish university has taken over the economic criteria measured by the number of grants and points. The commodification of knowledge also raises a number of ethical questions — it leads to a lowering of or abandoning of all academic standards, the degradation of authority in science, scientific criticism, and the actual quality of research and teaching. Is there room in the modern university for behaviors subject to moral evaluation? What are the skills required for — and the conditions for — the possibility of application of moral norms in academic life?

The Difficulties with Trope Nominalism
abstract |

One of the objections against trope nominalism is that tropes, contrary to the declarations of the their proponents, must be complex, which opens the road to a regress that can only be stopped by accepting some universals. The complexity of tropes is supposed to arise from the fact that the relation of resemblance and the relation of numerical difference, which occur between perfectly resembling tropes, must have separate foundations which are components of tropes themselves. These foundations again stand in resemblance and difference relations, thus they are also complex, and so on. In this article, I discuss this problem and try to refute the arguments of the opponents of trope nominalism. As a point of reference I take Paweł Rojek’s paper „Regresy podobieństwa. Podwójny relacyjny argument przeciw nominalizmowi tropowemu” [Resemblance regresses. A double argument against trope nominalism], which in an original way links together the various objections against trope nominalism. The structure of my article is as follows: first I briefly characterize trope nominalism and indicate what I have in common with this position. Then I characterize relations, in particular the resemblance relation, and then I present Rojek’s argument. Then I try to show that the argument for the complexity of tropes presupposes the principle of the identity of indiscernibles, which is rejected by nominalists. In the penultimate section, I point out that particularity is not a component of a trope, but a way in which a trope constitutes reality.

Sources of Polish Phenomenological Cartesianism
abstract |

The aim of this article is to examine the sources of Polish phenomenological Cartesianism, which the author hypothesises to be found in Kazimierz Twardowski’s doctoral dissertation Idee und Perception: Eine erkenntnistheoretische Untersuchung aus Descartes (1891). The dissertation is examined from the aspect of Brentano’s influence on it, which can be seen both at the level of epistemological solutions and in the concept of practising the history of philosophy. Although Twardowski corrects Brentano’s interpretation of Descartes, he remains on the ground of Brentano's descriptive psychology, which constitutes a certain preliminary version of phenomenology. The second part of the article reconstructs the Cartesian motif contained in Roman Ingarden’s egology as presented in his Człowiek i czas [Man and Time] (1937–1946), in order to conclude by characterising the common elements supporting the continuity and specificity of the Cartesian motif in the beginnings of Polish phenomenology.

Zbigniew Jordan’s Contribution to Supporting Contacts Between Polish Émigré Philosophy and Philosophy Developed in Poland
abstract |

Do grona jego znajomych i korespondentów należeli m.in.
The author presents little-known facts from the history of Polish science proving that representatives of Polish post-war emigration had a very good understanding of the situation of science in Poland. In philosophy, this situation was exemplified by the contacts of Zbigniew Jordan (1911–1977) with representatives of philosophy active in Poland. For many years, Jordan maintained regular contacts with approx. forty people belonging to the elite of Polish post-war philosophy and sociology. His friends and correspondents included, among others, Jan Łukasiewicz, Rev. Józef Pastuszka, Tadeusz Czeżowski, Maria and Stanisław Ossowski, Tadeusz and Janina Kotarbińscy, Adam Schaff, Leszek Kołakowski, Jan Szczepański, Andrzej Grzegorczyk, as well as Polish emigrants employed at Western universities. Owing to these contacts, he was able to achieve two goals at once. First of all, he popularized the achievements of Polish science worthy of commemoration, thanks to which his efforts ensured a close relationship between national and world science. Secondly, he ensured the historical continuity of Polish science, which was not interrupted even by the introduction of communist orders in the country, that boiled down to an attempt at rejecting the entire previous tradition. The author is of the opinion that science is the most important part of culture and for this reason Jordan's achievements should be popularized throughout the scientific community in Poland, as an example to be followed by its young adepts focusing exclusively on careers in foreign scientific institutions.

Thought Experiments in Philosophy: Review of Positions
abstract |

W pierwszej części artykułu podaję ogólną charakterystykę eksperymentów myślowych, zakładając podobieństwo eksperymentów myślowych i eksperymentów rzeczywistych. W drugiej części omawiam obecne w literaturze propozycje typologizacji eksperymentów myślowych. W trzeciej części przedstawiam sześć stanowisk dotyczących natury eksperymentu myślowego.
The widespread use of thought experiments in philosophy has made thought experiments themselves an increasingly common subject of philosophical analysis. Different authors, starting from various epistemological and metaphysical assumptions, have proposed a variety of views on the nature of thought experiments. The purpose of this paper is a critical analysis of these positions. In the first, I give a general characterization of thought experiments assuming the similarity of thought experiments and real experiments. In the second part, I discuss the typologizations of thought experiments present in the literature. In the third part, I present six concepts of thought experiment.
