Cognition and Creativity

The notion of creativity acquires in terms of the classical epistemology some uncertain conceptual status being even reduced to a purely psychological phenomenon. Non-classical epistemological approaches tend to rethink the oppositions of discovery and justification, artistic subjectivity and objectivity in science, self-expression and cognition, construction and representation. The origin of novelty, not only its functioning within stable system of knowledge, appears now a legal and significant philosophicalproblem.

Eliminativism and the Mental

The author offers a critique of eliminativism in philosophy of mind based on a discussion of the nature and the development of folk psychology. The author analyzes folk psychology as a subject to change and evolution and provides reasons why it is doubtful that the concepts of folk psychology will ever be fully substituted with those ofneurophysiology.

Non-Logical Foundations of Scientific Thinking

The author argues that it is necessary to take into consideration not only an active role of the context in the process of result-receiving in science but also the reverse influence of the problem situation in thinking on the formation of the corresponding conditions. In this case the context will not be arbitrary and the result will preserve its stability within definite bounds. Not only the changeability of a word in different contexts will be important but also the fact that we deal with the same word in each case.

The author analyzes the notion of proposition in the modern analytical philosophy. Propositions are some abstract entities of sentential type widely used in theory of meaning, theory of action, philosophy of mind, and epistemology. The author studies the main definitions of propositions and their complications. She claims that we do not need propositions to solve all the problems in different fields if we consider them separately.

Functionalism. Metaphysics Without Ontology
abstract |

Appealing to developmentof philosophy of mind in the twentieth century, the paper is aimed to show that metaphysics is not a matter of the past (as it is often believed) and that it revives in contemporary philosophy. The author analyzes modern functionalism and demonstrates that certain forms of metaphysical investigations could be compatible in principle with nonclassical philosophy. In this paper the conclusion about antisubstantialism of functionalism is drawn from N. Block’s interpretation of functionalism as metaphysics without ontology. It is argued that this conclusion allows classifying functionalism as a non-classical theory.

The author uses the history of European epistemological tradition as the basis for a construction of the theory of knowledge. The history of European epistemology is presented in the three basic models: objectivist-realistic, symbolic and constructivist. Some educational material on the topic is discussed and provided.

B. Latour’s and S. Woolgar’s Constructivism – At the Intersection of Scientific Disciplines.

The paper deals with B. Latour’s and S. Woolgar’s studies of molecular biology which has been exposed in their scandalous book «Laboratory Life. The Construction ofScientific Facts». The author shows that Latour and Woolgar construct an image of science (molecular biology) with the help of interdisciplinary methods connecting concepts of sociology, economy, anthropology and a history of a science. It is argued that scientific facts under such consideration undergo original «deconstruction». Some further epistemological consequences are discussed.

The article presents an argument that there exists similarity of practical applied research in social epistemology and organizational semiotics. The argument is based on the analysis of major approaches within organizational semiotics, a new scientific discipline which studies different forms of operating with knowledge presented in sign and symbol structures used in information systems.

Old Russian Cosmology and Theoretical Thinking: from Symbol to Concept
abstract |

The study of cosmological ideas in the ancient Russian booklearning gives a fresh look at the formation of theoretical thinking in antiquity. The author offers a classification of cognitive types designed to clarify the sources of cosmological ideas in theological writings and in the world picture of Aristotle and Ptolemy as well as to show that the Stagirite’s space mechanics is a model based on observation, logical reasoning, and theoretical reading of sacred symbols as well.

The paper contains the studies of Sergei N. Bulgakov’s ideas, a Russian religious philosopher, who at the beginning of the 20th century developed epistemology and methodology of social sciences and philosophy of science in general. The author discusses his concept of the nature of social sciences as a special type of scientific knowledge independent in its ontology and methodology and separate from natural sciences.
