The formation of nonclassical epistemology is characterized, among other aspects, by orientation in the experience of the humanities in contrast to epistemological classics, which grew on the comprehension of naturalscience knowledge. The last thirty years the special attention of philosophers is focused on the theme “knowledge andlanguage”, which threatens even to absorb by itself entire epistemological discourse. The analytical philosophy and poststructuralism are the polar positions, problematizing the basic concepts of the philosophy of language. The transformation of the object field and methodological set of instruments of the classical theory of knowledge, shaping of nonclassical approaches in epistemology comes out as the necessary background of these processes.

The Definition of Relativism

The best and simplest definition of relativism was proposed by the physicist Philipp Frank. Relativism, he said, is the rejection of absolutism. The rejection of absolutism is a necessary and sufficient condition. Many philosophers (such as Popper) reject this definition. They believe that the rejection of absolutism is a necessary but not a sufficient condition. They take this stance because they believe themselves to be neither relativists nor absolutists and therefore claim that some further necessary condition is required in the definition of relativism. A number of representative definitions of this more complicated kind are examined and found to contain methodological weaknesses. The definitions are eclectic and confuse themes, problems and positions that should be kept separate, e.g. they involve the conflation of relativism with idealism or irrationalism.

The Historical Context of Science: Material Culture and Ontologies
abstract |

Today we witness a striking development of “ontology discourse” in the humanities and particularly in science studies. It results from a dissatisfaction of some of the STSers with an epistemological or “simply” social perspective on science. The author discusses some of the offered models that put in the forefront technical objects and practical interrelations with things as preconditions of the very general ontological assumptions. The author tries to show that these models refer rather to dialectical but notdogmatic (essentialist) reading of objects involved in the lifeworld practices and, thus, they restore an ontological perspective but at the same time keep the social and cultural dimension of genesis of ideas.

Paradoxes of Identity: Is There an Alternative for a Standard Conception of Identity?
abstract |

The paper is dedicated to the problems in metaphysics of identity which have been discussed in analytic philosophy since the second half of XXth century. The author formulates the main principles of standard identity view and the puzzles which allegedly are generated by this view. He considers the main solutions to these puzzles which are proposed by P. Geach (relative identity), G. Myro (temporary identity), and A. Gibbard and D. Lewis (contingent identity). He defends the claim that none of the proposed modifications of the standart view of idenity can provide a satisfactory answer to the identity puzzles.

The paper gives a general overview of the contemporary discussions in the philosophy of language on the distinction between semantics and pragmatics. The author shows the importance of this distinction for the systematic formal approach to language, considers the most challenging cases (comparative adjectives, quantifier domain restriction, deferred reference, incomplitness) for this project and offers the overview of possible solutions within the project of formal semantic, without blurring the distinction between semantics and pragmatics.

The Principle of Beauty in Science
abstract |

Following the classical strategy of Plato, the paper discusses some issues of a step by step reflection with the students on the subjective notion of beauty. It is shown how in this process the thought is directed towards an understanding of the objective beauty of nature and creativity. Its criteria were given in the classical ancient philosophy. The most important concepts of modern science – the system, rhythm, cycle, analogy, symmetry, proportion, number – the Greek origin. It is argued that they reflect an understanding of beauty as a principle which is building the universe, the harmonious integrity of nature and man.

Putnam vs Rorty: A Debate on Pragmatism and Relativism
abstract |

The article offers an overview of the philosophical debate between Hilary Putnam and Richard Rorty, two American thinkers most responsible for reviving interest in a pragmatist approach to philosophy. The disagreements between Rorty and Putnam revolve around the same set of issues that divided William James and Charles Sanders Peirce – the question of realism, truth, and the ontological status of knowledge. Putnam views Rorty’s neopragmatic approach as a selfrefuting relativism driven by a deep irrationalism that casts doubt on the very possibility of thought. Rorty, on his part, accuses Putnam of realism and criticizes his conception of “idealized rational acceptability” as the updated version of Peirce’s limit theory of truth. The PutnamRorty debate reveals the controversial, flexible and selfcritical nature of pragmatism as philosophical movement.
