As an oversimplification of economic reductionism, the base/superstructure metaphor is over identified with Marxist theory of the state, and the state has been considered to be corresponding to the latter. This over identification was seen inconvenient by some Marxist theoreticians who have been looking forward to analyse the state through a non-reductionist perspective. In this article, those attempts are compared and contrasted by dividing them into two categories and by using open Marxism as the banner of a distinctive group among non-reductionists. The main theme of this article is to clarify major theses of non-reductionists and to address to the apparent tensions within themselves. Despite their points of differentiations, they share a commonality in their hostility towards ‘traditional historical materialism’ and even towards structural Marxism. The positions mentioned in this article may not be considered as a coherent and consistent non-reductionist theory of the state due to their variations within themselves; however, at least they are successful as contemporary ‘attempts’ of non-reductionist Marxist theory of the state that would pave ground to a more consistent theory. In this article, they are considered to be stimulating as they ground their unease with reductionism on appealing issues.

The main thesis of this study is that the history and philosophy of geography is visible example of the macro-epistemological debates. In this article, it is advocated that the history and the philosophy of geography has a potentiality of providing a new approach to the debate of Two Cultures. In geography, there is not any concept-fatigue about ‘Two Cultures’ and because of this situation the discipline of geography is more suitable than the other disciplines for discussing new approaches. On the other hand, it is investigated that in what extent the geography may retain the name of science as a multi-paradigm discipline. And also it is opened to debate that the multi-paradigm social science which emerged as a new model from the geography whether can be offer a new science definition. Of the 20th century’s last thirty years, the studies which were in oppositon to existing Two Cultures distinctions have found a large field for themselves in the philosophy and history of science (and the sociology of science which appendant to them). In this context, the development of the geography, discipline’s epistemological attitudes and macro-epistemological debates are investigated as parallel traces. The conclusion of the paper is that the discipline of geography as an empirical field of science studies is fully compatible with multi-paradigm science model.

The real goal of Marsilius is to establish the state on secular bases rather than all the old worldly powers alone. This is the modern, even revolutionary side of Marsilius. Marsilius, who had a great influence on reformers, was a secular thinker and by being a secular thinker, he was different from other reformers. The ideal of Marsilius, the Aristotelian in political thought and understanding, is to establish a secular society structure instead of the theocratic society structure in the middle ages. According to Marsilius, a secular society is based on earthly goals; such a society should try to achieve good living conditions in this world, not in the other world. That is precisely why there is no religious rule and dogma in a political society. Since religious truths are concerned only with spiritual well-being, those who deviate from these truths can only be punished in the other world.

According to Thagard, the behavior of practitioners of a field may also be used for demarcation between science and pseudoscience due to its social dimension in addition to the epistemic one. I defended the tendency of pseudoscientists to commit fallacies, and the number of fallacies they commit can be a secondary tool for demarcation problem and this tool is consistent with Thagardian approach. In this paper, I selected the astrology as the case and I revealed nine types of logical fallacies frequently committed by astrologers while introducing their field and/or defending their claims against the scientific inquiries and refutation efforts. I also argued that recognizing these fallacies may help the audience to demarcate between the scientific and the pseudoscientific arguments.

This article aims to investigate Nicolai Hartmann’s view of “value” and “values”, reveal his contributions to value philosophy. The notion of “value” is quite controversial in the history of philosophy. While some thinkers evaluate the notion of values as an unknowable, dark cilff; others point out the importance of the notion of values and describe it in different ways. A quick glimpse at the history of philosophy would be enough to see the lack of consensus regarding this topic. Hartmann contributed greetly to the philosophy of values with his crucial ideas. This article presents the content and importance of Hartmann’s philosophy of values and demonstrates the chance of making true evaluations.
