Philosophical Specialties used in the Directories
Each individual listed in Directory of American Philosophers or the International Directory of Philosophy and Philosophers is assigned up to three subject specialties from the list of philosophical specialties provided below. Names of individual philosophers may also be used as subject specialties (e.g. Aristotle, Derrida, Hume), though these are too numerous to be easily listed here. While we occasionally add new terms, we avoid doing this until a term is well-established in the secondary literature. The purpose of assigning specialties from a limited vocabulary of terms is to facilitate communication among philosophers with common interests.
