The Directory of American Philosophers remains the standard reference work for information about philosophical activity in the United States and Canada. It contains edited listings for 1,700 university and college philosophy programs, 13,600 philosophy faculty, graduate assistantships, research centers, professional organizations, academic journals, and philosophy publishers in both countries. It also contains multiple indexes, an extensive table of academic abbreviations, and a statistical profile of its contents that provides an overview of the current state of the profession. Now in its 25th edition, this directory remains the most comprehensive source of information on philosophical activity in North America in either print or electronic formats.

The Directory of American Philosophers is published every two years, alternating with its companion volume, the International Directory of Philosophy and Philosophers. Together these publications provide a comprehensive overview of organized philosophical activity around the world.

• UNIVERSITIES: These listings provide information for 1,712 university and college philosophy departments and programs. Entries include the department or program name, address, affiliation of the institution, total number of students enrolled at the school, highest degree offered in philosophy, department telephone and fax numbers, e-mail addresses, and web site (if available). Listings for philosophy faculty follow the departmental information, beginning with department chairpersons. Information about philosophy faculty includes name, highest degree earned, academic rank, phone number, e-mail address, and personal web site (if available). Areas of philosophical specialization are also provided for each of the thousands of individuals listed in this section.
  
  
• ASSISTANTSHIPS: Includes listings of the assistantships, fellowships, fee waivers, and other financial assistance offered by Ph.D. and M.A. programs in philosophy in the U.S. and Canada. Organized alphabetically by institution, these listings also provide the number of graduate students and the particular strengths of each program.
  
  
• CENTERS & INSTITUTES: Includes listings for 126 centers, institutes, and similar entities that support some form of philosophical activity. Generally speaking, an entity listed in this section does not require dues to be paid as a condition of membership or participation. Listings include the name, address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address and available web site, purpose of the organization, a description of its activities, meetings, officers, publications, and membership requirements.
  
  
• SOCIETIES & ASSOCIATIONS: Includes listings for 168 philosophical societies, associations, academies, and similar entities. Generally speaking, entities listed in this section require dues to be paid as a condition of membership or participation. The information provided for these entities is similar to that for Centers and Institutes.
  
  
• JOURNALS: Includes listings for 305 journals that publish scholarly work in philosophy and related areas, and whose editorial office is located in the U.S. or Canada. Listings provide the complete title of the journal, name and address of the editor, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address and web site, ISSN, purpose, sponsor, manuscript information for authors, information about book reviews published by the journal, frequency of publication, paid circulation, founding year, publisher, copyright holder, and subscription rates. Format information (print or electronic) has also been included, as well as information about the kinds of advertising accepted by the journal.
  
  
• PUBLISHERS: Includes listings for 170 publishers of philosophical monographs or serial publications in philosophy and related disciplines. Listings provide the complete name and address of the publisher, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address and URL, year established, and titles of series and journals.
  
  
• NAME & ADDRESS LISTINGS: This section contains names and addresses for over 13,600 US and Canadian philosophers listed in various sections of the Directory.
  
  
• STATISTICAL PROFILE: This section gives a numerical overview by category of the contents of the Directory, including departments by highest degree offered and faculty by rank.
